Death Sentence

There’s not a lot of introduction necessary for a film like Death Sentence. It’s a bloody revenge flick, plain and simple. If that’s your cup o’ tea, you will find exactly what you’re looking for, which is to the movie’s credit and detriment.

Death Sentence is the new millennium’s update of Death Wish, apparently based directly on the literary sequel of the original Death Wish novel. Prominent businessman Nick Hume is a happy family man. He’s got two great sons (the oldest of which, Brendan, is a trophy winning high school hockey star), and a gorgeous wife. Life is good. Just watch his home videos. On the way home one night from another one of Brendan’s stellar athletic performances, Nick and Brendan stop at a run down gas station in a seedy part of town, where a gang initiation is about to take place. As Nick pumps the gas, the group of degenerates busts into the small station and blow away the cashier while Brendan gets a slurpee. Before Nick can collect his wits in time to interrupt the initiation rite, Brendan takes a machete to the throat, mortally wounding him. After scuffling with the perp responsible and tearing off his mask, the guy escapes and Nick is left cradling his dying son all the way to the hospital. Once Brendan dies and Nick discovers that there aren’t enough legal grounds to send the murderous gang member to a life behind barb wire, he takes matters into his own hands and drops the murder charges in order to go exact his own justice, gutting the gang banger and unwittingly starting a war: him vs. the rest of the pissed-off gang, with the lives of Nick’s wife and remaining son also thrown on the chopping block. And there you have the trailer synopsis.

Death Sentence definitely has its merits. For a revenge story, the execution is absolutely unforgiving and bloody, which I will grant props to. The moments of levity are next to nil (despite a couple instances of forced melodrama) as the tone of the film grows progressively bleaker as it goes along. It’s definitely ballsy in its consistency. The level of violence exists in the same vein as Running Scared: shocking and morally ambiguous. After the first rather docile half hour of setup for the story, the brutality is relentless, proving that in a few key white-knuckled scenes, including a foot chase through a parking garage in a continuous shot that lasts several minutes. To name some other key positives for the film, Kevin Bacon shines in a lead role that is definitely beneath him, but it’s the humanity that he injects into Nick Hume that elevates the story further than it would be otherwise. John Goodman also throws his own special touches into the mix as a grimy gun runner with unexpected ties.

As a whole though, the movie is significantly uneven. There are a few contributing issues involved here. Other than Bacon and Goodman, the acting leaves quite a bit to be desired. After handling himself impressively as one of Singleton’s Four Brothers, Garrett Hedlund is disappointingly one-note as the ruthless gang leader, and Kelly Preston leaves much to be desired as Nick’s oblivious wife. No one else even gives enough to factor in to a critique.

Another problem I had was Nick’s physical resilience. There wasn’t much to suggest that the guy’s much of a brawler, but there are moments when he pulls some straight up Chow Yun Fat moves on his attackers one second while fumbling around like a clumsy amateur the next. It’s not like David in Straw Dogs, where the weak man draws out a base viciousness in order to survive. It’s almost like Nick had some black ops training in his past. As “out there” as the story is, that element made it a tad too unbelievable. The story’s resolution was also really unkempt, leaving more ambiguity than the movie deserved to have.

Overall, I enjoyed Death Sentence. It didn’t pretend to be anything other than what it was, and I respect it for that, to an extent. I saw the potential there for some deeper philosophical thought to be explored in the nihilistic paradigm that Death Sentence created for itself, but other than some vaguely implied exploration on love and conscience, it never took advantage. Still, at the very least, it absolutely delivers on its premise. It’s one of the best revenge thrillers in recent memory, and gives reason to hope that Saw director James Wan is more than a one trick pony.

I’m not sure what to make of this film. On the one hand I’m curious to see how it plays out and if James Wan can actually make something more than a horror flick and apparently, he has somewhat succeeded. I doubt I’ll make the trip to the theater but I’ll certainly add it to the rental queue.
