Is This Real?

A shitty video-taped shot of “The Dark Knight” Trailer. It doesn’t show anything and the morons filming it can’t even hold the camera even close to still. But hey, here it is if you care…

I’d be more impressed if this were fake. The “directors” in that case made it seem like it was real by the crappy way they captured it. If it is real, at the very least, hold the bloody camera still!

‘Silver Surfer’ Spin-off

According to RottenTomatoes.com, amongst others, there is going to be a spin-off movie involving the character of the Silver Surfer from the newly released film Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (you can read my review here). Creator of the TV show Babylon 5 has said that he is most likely going to be writing the script for the film. The PG rating for both the Fantastic Four films meant that the action  had to be on the softer side but this spin-off film is reportedly going to be a bit darker (and possibly more violent?).

 Silver Surfer

Now after seeing the Silver Surfer in action in the cheesy sequel I have to admit I am kind of looking forward to this spin-off film. I liked the way they brought the character to screen, the special effects were the best thing about the film so a whole movie consisting of that eye-candy can’t be that bad. Or can it?

TV To Movies

I was searching around the net for any interesting bits of news or information and I came across a rumour that apparently has been going around for quite a while. And that is that there may be a movie version of the hit TV show Lost (of which I am a massive, devoted fan of). Now take this, the same as with every other rumour, with a grain of salt. I am in no way confirming that there will in fact be a Lost movie.

   Lost

But this got me thinking. I know that plenty of TV shows from the past, namely from the 80’s, have been turned into semi-successful and often, but not always, half decent movies (such as Starsky & Hutch and The Dukes of Hazzard). But my question for you is this - which current or older TV shows would you like to see be made into a movie that hasn’t been already? Which ones would work and which ones just don’t translate? Lost? 24? The A-Team? What are your thoughts?

Dark Knight Poster

Found this over on Flixster’s profile for The Dark Knight. I think it’s fan made, but I don’t see it anywhere else on the net. Even if it is not real, it’s pretty cool.

Dark Knight Poster

The actual photo is the same thing we’ve seen a million times now, but I like how it’s incorporated here with a tagline and kind of at an angle. It works well.

Star Wars vs Spider-Man 3

George Lucas From the Fox news room, George Lucas announces that

“[Spider-Man 3] is a silly movie. … There just isn’t much there. Once you take it all apart, there’s not much story, is there?”

Funny, Spider-Man 3 is the only big budget, summer blockbuster that Lucas’ company, Industrial Light and Magic, didn’t do the effects for. Now, the first thing that pops into my mind is, well GL, that’s all well and good (and true); but isn’t Star Wars 1 fairly silly? And his retort?

“People thought Star Wars was silly, too, but it wasn’t.”

Then, the interview takes a Star Wars and Indiana Jones turn. Lucas says he will make two more live-action films based in the Star Wars era.

“But they won’t have members of the Skywalker family as characters,” he said. “They will be other people of that milieu.”

The two extra films will also be made for TV and probably be an hour long each. But, like the animated Star Wars show, “Clone Wars,” Lucas doesn’t know where on TV they will land. Maybe on cable pay channels like HBO or Showtime? Could be awesome. Could suck ass. Either way, I’ll be in front of my TV with a big bucket of popcorn, a catheter and the DVR on constant record the night those films air.

Regarding Indy IV, the interview with Roger Friedman goes this way:

Lucas is currently preparing Indiana Jones 4 with Harrison Ford, Cate Blanchett and Shia LaBoeuf. The latter plays Ford’s son, which means his mother was possibly Marion, the character Karen Allen played in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

“I can’t say,” Lucas said when I brought up Allen.

Lucas says that Sean Connery still hasn’t signed on, but his character, Indy’s dad, is in the script. Other than that, his lips are sealed.

“Steven thinks we can keep the whole thing a secret,” Lucas told me. “I explained to him that it’s impossible nowadays. We can’t live like that.”

So then, tell me more about “Indy 4,” I suggested.

“Oh no,” replied Lucas with a smile.

Tease.

The Hawk is Dying

Paul Giamatti     Since Paul Giamatti is the greatest living actor of our time, I feel I would be remiss in not giving a glimpse of his newest film, The Hawk is Dying. With other upcoming films on his plate such as Shoot em Up and the much anticipated Fred Claus with Vince Vaughn; not to mention his role in Coscarelli’s Bubba Noferatu and the Curse of the She-Vampires, I have had no choice but to spend my entire allowance on the Hollywood Stock Exchange and buy up all the Giammatti stock I can afford.

Enough Giamatti ass-kissing. Here’s the newest trailer. It looks fairly indie, which is definitely not a bad thing and it looks like it has some decent side roles as well. Plus, it’s based on a novel by one of my favorite authors, Harrey Crews. This will be great I have no doubt.

Next Step for the Grindhouse

As many of you know, Grindhouse has not been doing so well at the box office. There are plenty of reasons for this. The most obvious being lack of marketing. Most people I talked to as of last Friday had never heard of it and when I mentioned it to them, they thought it sounded stupid (of course they were very, VERY wrong).

But another issue, according to Weinstein THE issue, is the running time. I was reading this morning over at deadlinehollywooddaily.com through Richard’s site that Harvey Weinstein is thinking of re-releasing the films in a couple of weeks, but seperating the two films (Grindhouse is a double bill of two films - Planet Terror and Death Proof) while adding additional footage to each segment. Here’s what Weinstein said in an interview:

”First of all, I’m incredibly disappointed. We tried to do something new and obviously we didn’t do it that well,” Harvey told me today. “It’s just a question of how is it going to hang in there. But we could split the movies in a couple of weeks. Make Tarantino’s a full-length film, and Rodriguez’s too. We’ll be adding those ‘two missing reels’ that’s talked about in the movie.” (At one point in Grindhouse, a sex scene is interrupted because of “two missing reels” — one of the many conceits and indulgences.)

I have to say, from a money standpoint, this makes quite a bit of sense, from a fan standpoint - I HATE it. This is the way the films are being released in Europe; in fact that’s been the plan the whole time. Only in North America did we get the experience the way the film makers intended: as a double bill. There is no way I would’ve enjoyed my experience even half as much had I had to watch Planet Terror (review), then walk out of the theater, go wait in line (maybe have to wait longer depending on how showtimes are scheduled) and then go in to see Death Proof. Not cool. Not to mention how this might affect the fake trailers and retro ratings warnings that are interspersed between the two segments.

So this bugs me, but if it gets more people to go see this awesome movie (my favorite of the year so far), then more power to ‘em I guess. And PS - since this is a Weinstein produced film, only Blockbuster subscribers will be able to rent it on DVD; which is stupid. But this is a theater going experience anyway. Screw the DVD and get to the theater NOW!

Indy IV Trailer This Thanksgiving

I was just reading over at Dave’s site that George Lucas is claiming that an Indiana Jones trailer will reach theaters as early as this Thanksgiving. Most likely in front of Beowulf as both films are being released by Paramount.

I kind of think this is weird. If there is a trailer, it will be nothing more than a teaser, similar to that of the early Simpsons trailer; ie, nothing substantive. Still, if this gets confirmed later on during the summer, I’ll be there to check it out.

Walken to Play Ozzy

[update 3/17] -this rumor has been shattered. Damn.

Almost a year ago now, I posted my excitement about a Motley Crue film adapted from their autobiographical book, “The Dirt.” Since then, Larry Charles (Borat and Curb Your Enthusiasm) has taken the helm as director. Now there’s some new rumours out there about the stars: Walken to play Ozzy (influence and friend to The Crue) and Val Kilmer to play Van Halen’s lead, David Lee Roth.

These casting decisions are still in the rumor stage, but this is according to Tommy Lee (drummer) and the story from Moviehole.com. These actors are also listed on IMDb.com (which is notorious for getting things wrong this early in the game). If the rumors turn out to be true, however, I can’t imagine many others better suited to play the Oz-man other than Walken. Sure, he doesn’t really look like the guy, but he’s eccentric enough and we know he’s got the talent. Should be fun anyway. Kilmer can do anything and he’s already played a rocker once or twice, so this shouldn’t be too difficult for him and it should work out terrifically.

Axel Foley is Back!

According to Variety.com, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, has taken some initiative to get the Bevery Hills Cop franchise rolling again. Also, Eddie Murphy has been slated to reprise his famous, career making role of Alex Foley.

I for one think this is fairly positive news. First the Rocky announcement, now this. I’d like to see Murphy get back into some harder edge stuff than his latest attempts at kids stuff. Granted he wants to make a positive influence on his kids, but he’s no doubt a comedic genius (well, genius might be a bit of a strong word) and should get back to what he’s good at. Even though I generally hate the idea of another remake/sequel because Hollywood has no originality anymore.

You can read the full article HERE, but di Bonaventura had this to say:

“Axel Foley is one of the great action-comedy characters, a character that Eddie loves. I’m lucky enough to help bring it back. This genre is missing from the landscape.”

With some recent Oscar buzz for his role in this winter’s Dreamgirls, Murphy has a real shot at making this franchise work again. And yes, you heard me right; not only is Dreamgirls the current front-runner for best picture, Eddie Murphy himself may actually brandish a best supporting actor nomination for his portrayal in the film.

New Transformers Still Shot

Vega Brothers

More than ten years ago, I had heard the rumors of Tarantino doing a Vega Brothers movie.  For those of you who don’t know, Vincent Vega (John Travolta) from Pulp Fiction and Vic Vega aka Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen) from Reservoir Dogs, are actually brothers.  Two awesome characters that had great potential in a project together.  However, now that they’re older a prequel is really out of the question and since…

The Bourne Ultimatum

Ok, so after reading “The Bourne Identity,” I was less than thrilled with the movie.  It wasn’t horrible, just not great.  I never did get around to seeing The Bourne Supremacy and to be honest, probably never will…probably.  However, if it’s a requisite to see before seeing the up and coming part three, The Bourne Ultimatum, then I guess I’ll have to see it, because I just read this little tidbit of info from realmovienews.com.

Apparently, it is rumored that the up and coming, great actor, Gael Garcia Bernal (Amorres Perros, Motorcycle Diaries, Science of Sleep) is being asked to play the role of the lead villain in The Bourne Ultimatum.  If this news turns out to be true and if Bernal accepts the offer, this will officially be one of the most anticipated movies of 2007 for me.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.  I love seeing great character actors take on villainous roles.  Especially if that actor has never done it before.  It is always, always a great treat.  Hoffman in MI:3, Costner in 3000 Miles to Graceland, Jodi Foster in Inside Man and now Bernal in Bourne.

Throw in the fact that it’s being by director Paul Greengrass, who directed the best movie of the year so far, United 93. Plus co-starring with Damon and Bernal, would be hollywood greats, Julia Stiles, Joan Allen and the amazing David Strathairn.  I don’t really see how the movie could be bad or how you could not be excited about it.

I’ll keep abreast on this situation and let you know if this comes to pass.  Oh I hope so, because then I have just one more excuse to go to the movie theater on a day when I hadn’t planned to.  Maybe I will rent Supremacy, just to get warmed up.

Sometimes You Gotta Ask Why

So as if Alien vs. Predator wasn’t bad enough, there will be an Alien vs. Predator 2 - which is actually old news, but they’ve found some cast memebers now.  This is from Variety…

As Alien Vs Predator 2 stalks towards production, its casting face huggers have attached themselves to a pair of actors better known for their TV work than their film careers.

Reiko Aylesworth, AKA Michelle on 24 has been cast alongside Rescue Me’s Steven Pasquale.  It’s not known what roles they’ll be playing yet, but they’ll be under the direction of Colin and Greg Strause.

As a movie snob, I don’t understand the point of making this movie.  As a businessman, I totally get it.  A bunch of poor schlubs doled out over $170 million dollars just in box office receipts for this crap the first time through (plus DVD rentals and sales).  It makes me sad that creative talent is being wasted on this filth.\

However: I have heard rumors that Ash (Evil Dead, Army of Darkness) could be involved.  If that’s the case, then this is a whole new ball of wax and woul officially be the film I’d most look forward to in years.  Bruce Campbell is a golden god.  But I seriously doubt that’s going to happen.  I’ll keep you posted.

No Saw III Press Screenings

Uh-oh!  We all know what that means - the movie is going to suck.  Not that that is really much of a surprise.  Horror movies suck in general and Saw II is in the upper eschelons of stupidness.  With the very rarest of exceptions, studios that don’t release their films for critics before the wide release dates, do so because they know the movie is a steaming pile of horse manure and don’t want negative press before the release date.

It’s possible that the makers are so confident that the film will market itself simply by title alone, just knowing everyone’s going to go to see how the trilogy resolves.  But if I were a betting man, I’d say my first hypothesis is true… the movie is going to suck hard. I first read about this at Filmstalker!

Wonder Woman Cast?

Rumors and predictions have been flying through the internet blogosphere like wild fire trying to guess who will play the new Wonder Woman.  My vote has and always will be for the always glorious Kate Beckinsdale, but apparently she’s unfortunately turned down the role.

The new rumor from “Life Style Extra” is that one of the stars from The WB’s “The O.C.,” Rachel Bilson is now slated for the role.  Apparently she donned the famous American outfit complete with the starred Daisy Dukes for an episode of “The O.C.”  This is all just rumor at this point as Warner Brothers has not confirmed yet.  But still, it seems semi-credible as Bilson has worked with Wonder Woman script writer, Joss Whedon, in a few episodes of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”  Bilson is also appearing in this weekend’s opening of the new Zach Braff film, The Last Kiss.

I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.  I’m still holding out hope Beckinsdale will have a change of heart, but I’m not holding my breath.

Back On “Wall Street”

More than simple rumors abound that a Wall Street sequel is indeed in the works.

Moviehole carries an interesting tid-bit from an inside source at Fox:

“It’s a continuation of the Gordon Gecko story….set twenty-odd years later. Basically, it’d start with Gecko coming out of jail - everything caught up with him, as it did most people like him at the end of the 80s - and then having to apply his ways to the very changed world.”

Apparently, both Douglas and “Wall Street” director Oliver Stone are in the “early stages” of writing the film…It’s Douglas. It’s Oliver Stone. It’s Ed Pressman, producing.

As for whether Chuck Sheen will return, to reprise his role from the first film, doesn’t sound like it. According to the source, “No idea, but doubtful. Heard nothing on Sheen. I assume, maybe, the only other person that might return is Sean Young - amusingly enough - as Douglas’s wife. Have to wait to see the script, though.”

Done deal. As long as it’s Michael Douglas, who’s getting older but still releases good material (The Sentinel), and Oliver Stone, I’m in. I doubt it will be the Oscar winner the first one was, but there are sooo many possibilities for a story here, that it’s just got be good. “Greed is good.”

Terry Potter

The latest from the internet rumor mill is that Terry Gilliam may be directing the next Harry Potter film: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. As you may or may not know, I am a huge detractor of the Harry Potter franchise. I think all of them are silly and boring. The last one especially pissed me off because it had so much potential and then flopped on so many levels…for me anyway.

But if anyone can resurrect the franchise for me, I can’t think of anyone better than the likes of Monty Python alum, Terry Gilliam. The dreamlike, 17th century quality to his films would be a perfect match for a Potter film. I didn’t think a whole lot of his latest effort, The Brothers Grimm, but in the past, he has succeeded time and time again with great tales. Here is a bit from an interview Gilliam had with Entertainment Weekly back in September:

“I was reading the script as I was flying to Los Angeles for the Warner Bros meeting and thought, ‘Oh, she’s seen Time Bandits, she’s seen Monty Python.’“You know you’re not going to get the job. It’s just to keep her happy - due diligence.

“The terrible thing about it was during the course of the meeting, I started getting enthusiastic - I was even getting myself excited. I remember leaving the meeting, getting in my car and driving for about two hours along Mulholland Drive just so angry I’d allowed myself to get excited about it.

“I mean, Chris Columbus’ versions are terrible. Just dull. Pedestrian. But I thought Alfonso Cuaron did a great job with the last one. I thought, ‘Yeah, you got really close to it’.”

Of course I’ll see any upcoming Potter films partly out of curiosity and partly because people demand reviews of such huge films, but I never enjoy them. The Gilliam factor I think could really change all that. He could bring the franchise back with less effects and green screens, and more true film making with props and sets. For the first time, I’m actually interested to see what a Harry Potter film can be.

Tarantino and Hendrix Bio

Recently, word came down the pipe that Quentin Tarantino was beginning preproduction on a Jimi Hendrix biography. Internet buzz and speculation originally had Lenny Kravitz in the hot seat. But that seems to have been just a rumor. Now apparently, Tarantino is reportedly not even sure if the project will get off the ground because of difficulty with casting decisions. That actually makes sense. He’d need to find an actor who is good, at least slightly resembles Jimi and also must be a decent musician (or at least be able to pretend like he is).

Anyway, I’m keeping close tabs on the story, so stop by here and leave updates as they come in.

Motley Crue-vie?

According to an article I read in today’s Empire Magazine Online, former “Seinfeld” writer, Larry Charles, has been speaking with Paramount Pictures about adapting “The Dirt,” a Motley Crue autobiography, into a mainstream film.

Charles also directed and wrote some “Curb Your Enthusiasm” episodes as well as directing the film, “Masked and Anonymous.”

As a tenage Crue fan, I admit that I would pay money to see this and probably be excited as well. I did read the book and I don’t see how the film can be any different than any of those other VH1-type movies about any other “sex, drugs & rock n’ roll” band (Def Leppard, Skid Row, Poison, etc.).

Still, The Crue were the kings of decadence and they helped get me through the hell that was West Jr. High. So I’m all about a movie being made. Now I’m just curious to find out who plays the band members.
