I Need Your Help

I am flying out to Ottawa (its the capital of Canada for all you U.S. readers) and I’m curious if anyone can direct me to some cool theaters. I’m not so much interested in the big cineplexes but more so in the artsy independent film theaters. I’m also planning on doing some DVD shopping. Does anyone know if there are any really cool Video stores? I’m thinking of hitting the Chinatown there to see if I can pick up some good foreign movies.

I shall have my laptop with me so I’ll continue to post as close to daily as I can while I’m there. I’m about half way through a long post that I hope everyone finds interesting. It should be up in a day or so.

Oh, and if you live in around Ottawa feel free to comment and perhaps we can hook up and catch a movie. Even though I’ll have the family with me I’m still planning on seeing at least one movie a week.

Rambo IV Footage

This was actually released a few days ago, but I wanted to wait for a YouTube version to post. And here it is. There is no way in hell that this is an actual trailer for general audiences because of the violence, but it’s still damn cool footage. I’m not a huge Rambo fan. The first film explores him as a character very well. The rest are unbelievable, action-packed nonsense. Fun? Maybe. Well done films? Hardly.

So it’s difficult to say how this film will turn out, but it looks pretty damn violent and realistic. If it’s got some character and story depth to it, there could be something to this. I enjoyed Rocky Balboa (mp review) for what it was and I think Rambo 4 could be more of that. Check out the trailer below and leave your thoughts.

HD Fighting for Supremacy Over Blu-Ray

According to Showbizdata.com, Toshiba is planning a major price reduction and some special incentives in late May and throughout June. The story goes like this:

Toshiba intensified its high-definition-disk battle with Sony’s Blu-ray players by offering a month-long, instant $100 rebate on its own HD DVD players. The rebate brings down the price of a high-definition player to a record-low $299. In addition, Toshiba is offering to knock $100 off the price of any of its HDTV sets that are purchased with an HD DVD player. The company recently announced that buyers of its HD DVD players would also be able to select five free HDTV movies from a selection of fifteen. The promotion is set to launch on Sunday and continue until June 16.

I’m still not sold on the whole HD thing anyway, so I won’t be purchasing until there is a clear cut winner and when it will make a difference on my TV set anyway. But still, I think Toshiba sees that it is losing this war and this is one of their last ditch attempts at regaining some ground.

What would you like to see here?

This is just a quick post asking all the readers if there is any specific things they would like to see covered here on the blog? I read about 10-20+ websites with movie news every day and they often lead me to other sites. So far I’ve been keeping most movie posts fairly mainstream. Do we have any readers who are totally into the independent scene? How about news about DVDs in addition to just stuff that is going to be out in theaters? Or would you all like me to just continue posting about anything that catches my eye that I feel the general web going movie audience would like to know about?

VES 50

The VES, or Visual Effects Society has released its top 50 most influential films for visual effects of all time. Movieweb has the full story. Thanks to Simone via facebook for the heads up. Though I’d personally move “Metropolis” a bit higher up the list. I can’t argue with Star Wars in the #1 spot and think this is a pretty good list. Even if most of them are no-brainers to belong here.

Eric Roth, Executie Director of VES says:

“We’re thrilled to present VES 50. These films have had a significant, lasting impact on the practice and appreciation of visual effects as an integral, artistic element of cinematic expression and the storytelling process.”

Here are the top 10; to see the rest of the list, just click on the spoiler button to unwrap the enitre list (even though there aren’t any spoilers).

10. The Abyss (1989)
9. Alien (1979)
8. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
7. King Kong (1933)
6. Tron (1982)
5. Jurassic Park (1993)
3. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) (tie)
3. The Matrix (1999) (tie)
2. Blade Runner (1982)

New Poll

Because of internal pressure, I’ve changed the poll on the right side of this blog. Take a moment to cast your vote. My vote was for Ocean’s 13 by the way.

Not as Cool as it Sounds

James Doohan, better known as Scotty on the popular TV and film versions of “Star Trek,” had his remains shot into space by a rocket on Saturday morning. But not really. According to the AP, a few grams of his ashes, along with those of about 200 more people were launched on a 20 foot rocket and blasted off into the atmosphere. But, since it was a “suborbital” flight, the rocket soon parachuted back to Earth safely a short time later.

So what’s the point of this? If you’re going to have your ashes shot off into space, shouldn’t they travel the solar system and beyond? So these people paid nearly $500 to see the ashes fly into the air and come back. Whoop-de-do. I would expect better for someone who almost single handedly kept the engines on the USS Enterprise running for almost 40 years through galaxy to galaxy. Just seems odd to me. Here’s the full story over at Yahoo! news.

Getting to Know Me

Andrew has been kind enough to give me the ability to blog here about movies and other things that interest me. I’ve been blogging on and off now for about 5 years or so. I have my own little movie site that my friends use to see what I’m thinking of seeing in theater each week but it doesn’t really cover much more than that. I’m a computer technician with the Canadian Federal Government. I’m in my mid Thirties with one son who is already addicted to kid’s movies at the age of 4. My wife has very different tastes than I do in movies. She likes happy romance comedies, while I like good movies. ;) I figure the best way to see what I’m like is for me to post a top 10 list of movies. These top 10 lists always amuse me because no sooner than I post one of them I change my mind. There are really too many good movies to definitively say what are my favorite. Given that, here are my current top 10:

10. A Funny Thing Happened On The Way Too The Forum
I generally don’t like slapstick but there is just something about this movie that makes me laugh. I think it also has something to do with the fact that one of my old Classics (Greek and Roman studies) professors used to show this to all his 1st year courses. It has a who’s who of old comedians. One of the best parts is Zero Mostel contorting his face to actually appear as a classical theater mask.

9. Léon
This is my favorite Luc Besson film. There is just something wonderful in a dark way about the relationship between Mathilda and Léon. What really puts it in the top 10 for me is the ending scene between Léon and Stansfield. I can’t think of a more beautifully filmed death.

8. Miller’s Crossing
I’m Irish Canadian and I have a thing for gangster crime flicks. The Coen Brothers out do all other gangster flicks for style. I may think that the Godfather Trilogy is a more important and better filmed piece of cinema but I enjoy Miller’s Crossing much more and have seen it more times than I can count.

7. Unforgiven
This is such a powerful poignant western. Clint Eastwood shows everyone that he has the chops to be a top director for the first time in my opinion. I love movies that have a sadness about them yet tell a good story. I can’t think of a better movie when it comes to that.

6. Drunken Master II
I was introduced to Jackie Chan back before he was recognized in North America with this movie at my University Theater. That theater is now closed but I still have fond memories of being amazed at what Jackie does in Drunken Master II. I don’t think he’s come close in any of his other movies to the comedic and action brilliance he showed here.

5. Indiana Jones Trilogy*
Indiana Jones is what turned me onto Archeology originally. All three of these are great pulp with wonderful action. My order of preference would be Raiders, Last Crusade and then finally Temple of Doom.

4. Original Star Wars Trilogy*
I know it is mostly due to the nostalgia effect but I love all three of these movies. I pretty much hate the new trilogy and wish that Lucas had never created them. At least once a year I have a movie day where I watch all three of these in a row. My order of preference would be Last Hope, Empire Strikes Back and then Return of the Jedi. I know that Empire is a better film but I just prefer watching Last Hope more. Perhaps its because I remember seeing it at the drive in so many years ago.

3. Little Children
Something just clicked with me when I watched Little Children. Perhaps its because I could connect on some level with Brad. What really set this movie apart for me was the sense of dread I had going into the finale. I couldn’t believe how tied up I had become with all the characters. Normally I complain about happy ending type movies but in the end I was surprised and pleased with the feeling of hope that came from the ending of Little Children.

2. Infernal Affairs Trilogy*
I was hosting a party at my place one evening and it ended up wrapping up a bit early. I didn’t feel like heading to bed just yet so I threw in Infernal Affairs. Five or so hours later I had watched all of them in a row. The first movie is so subtle in its story compared to the remake. While the second and third movies are each a bit weaker than the first they still tell a wonderful story when combined as one large movie.

1. Oldboy
I can’t think of a movie that made me go “wow” afterwards more than this movie. Old Boy is filmed so well and tells such a great revenge story. While I don’t think think the North American remake will come anywhere near the brilliance of the original I am hoping that it will mean the DVD of the original is released wide to North America. I can’t really say too much about how good this movie is in a very short space other than to simply suggest to track it down however possible.

* I generally count trilogies as one big movie.

Star Wars Postage

A couple of weeks ago I wrote a post about how The United States Postal Service was setting up R2-D2 shaped mailboxes around the country in anticipation of their new Star Wars stamps being released soon. Well, the stamp art has been released and I have to say, I think they’re damn cool.

You can go to USPS.com which is all decked out Star Wars style and if you refresh the page several times (or just click on the Star Wars logo) you’ll get several different layouts and styles of the page featuring a different character each time. This is pretty cool.

Also, vote for which stamp you like the best. In order, I like:

Millenium Falcon
Boba Fett
Vader
…Though the Stormtrooper one is cool too.

I won’t vote for any new episode stamps and I don’t like the one of Han and Chewie because it doesn’t really look very much like Han. Not sure what happened there. Anyway, you can vote once per day per email address if you really feel like it.

They also are releasing special Star Wars postal envelopes. Check those out too.

Just thought this was kind of fun. Considering the 30 year anniversary of the greatest story ever put to film is just around the corner on May 25th.
May the force be with you…

A Message from Zach Braff

Zach just posted a bulletin on myspace that explains that his ONE attempt at directing an episode of Scrubs airs this Thursday at 9pm eastern time on NBC. I’ve only watched the show a couple of times, but since I’m a fan of Garden State and Braff in general, maybe I’ll check this out…if I remember.

That’s it. So wow. Lots of leftwing documentaries but not the best one (Who Killed the Electric Car?). Also I was shocked to see the inclusion of Beerfest, which beats out The Science of Sleep and The Last Kiss as a better picture? Ok. I haven’t seen it so I guess, whatever.

VERY shocked to see Shut Up & Sing in the top 10. That is just WRONG! No way is it anywhere near as good as pretty much anything in the top 30. Well anyway, interesting list to be sure. If you’d like to see the list along with some commentary, you can see the whole thing over at MOVIEFONE.COM

Be sure to check out the MoviePatron TOP 10 of 2006 on next week’s cinecast with Andrew James and Kurt of Twitchfilm.net. You can download the newest episodes HERE

Colonial Fleet vs. Imperial Forces

Because I’m a dork, the biggest Star Wars fan I know and a recent Battlestar Galactica convert, I had to post this movie. Damn fine fan made film if you ask me. Listen closely to how the music splices seamlessly from SW to Galactica depending on which side “you are on.” Frakin cool.
