Awaken the Dragon

Enter the Dragon     So get this, over at Kung Fu Cult Cinema I found a news bit about Enter the Dragon being remade. My initial thought is damn this just sucks, but the more I thought about it the more I figured I’d head out and see it. Is it a bit of a sacrilege to remake this movie? Sure it is but no more than that of half of the remakes that get made. It sounds like they are going to switch things up a bit:

Based on a screenplay by Sutter himself, the film will be titled Awaken the Dragon and follows a FBI agent who tracks down a Shaolin monk and his journey into the world of underground martial arts fight clubs.

IT also sounds like they are going to turn it into a film noir style film. This actually could work. My only worry is they won’t go far enough and they will simply remake the movie and have someone who isn’t anywhere near the fighter that Bruce Lee was and it will just be completely forgettable. If they do go with a new style and change things up I’ll be interested to see it.

Downloading Movies from Blockbuster

bbandml.jpg

In scanning the dailies this morning, Blockbuster’s investor relations page is announcing that they have bought out Movielink, which is one of the biggest movie download services on the internet.

From Blockbuster’s investor website:

“…Blockbuster Inc. has acquired Movielink, one of the nation’s leading movie download services. The acquisition gives Blockbuster access to one of the largest libraries of downloadable movies and a large array of television content. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

With thousands of movies and television shows available in its digital library for downloading, Movielink offers customers the ability to legally download entertainment content for rental (VOD) and for purchase (EST)…

…Blockbuster plans to continue to operate the Movielink service and to eventually make elements of the service available through blockbuster.com.”

I’m a Blockbuster user and absolutely LOVE the service provided. We’ve gone over the pros and cons between BB and Netflix and for me, it is absolutely a no-brainer. BB reigns completely in terms of service and value. With this added bonus of the possibility of downloading movie just devotes me further to the BB club.

However, with that last statement in the quote above in mind, it doesn’t appear that just by being a BB customer means you get automatic use of the Movielink service. It may end up being that way, but as of right now, I don’t see anything that says that difinitively. All we know is BB bought them. Maybe they’ll just run the site as it has been under new management. We’ll have to wait and see. Still, BB is way better (for me) than Netflix ever was; and I have been a customer of both services at one time or another.

Feast 2 and 3 are Coming

Feast     I‘m not sure how many of you caught the original Feast movie. It was the first movie created by Project Greenlight. “Project Greenlight is a contest and documentary series, and money making venture, focusing on amateur filmmaking. Founded by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Chris Moore through their production company LivePlanet, along with Miramax Films, Project Greenlight first aired on HBO for two seasons before moving to Bravo for season three.” (wikipedia)

Feast was by no means a terrific piece of cinema but it sure was a fun campy horror movie and the following news makes me happy. I just found out over on Fangoria via Beyond Hollywood that Feast 2 and 3 are going to be coming out.

FEAST 2 and 3 are coming together, with [director John] Gulager back,” Dunstan tells Fango. “Neo Art & Logic is producing again, and if they let us get away with the vulgarities we’ve currently scripted, and if we don’t get deported, we just may have the NC-17-rated monsterfest that was only hinted at in the first film.

I’m going to make the guess that these will both get a very limited (if at all) release in theater but I’ll probably still check them out on DVD when I’m in the mood for some schlock.

I’m Boycotting the Grindhouse DVD

Current Mood:Angry emoticon Angry & Angry emoticon Angry

Grindhouse is being destroyed

While scanning all the comic-con news from this past weekend (I think it’s official - I’ll be going next year), I came across some very disheartening news. We already knew that the studio is ruining the film by splitting up the two films that are within Grindhouse (Planet Terror and Death Proof) to make a few extra dollars and recoup the loss they incurred when no one went and saw this great movie.

Well, as everyone knows, part of the greatness that is the Grindhouse experience was the inclusion of faux trailers for movies that don’t really exist. But according to ESplatter, these great trailers will NOT be included in either of the DVD releases. This, my friends, pisses me off!

While I look forward to seeing the extended version of Death Proof, plus all the extras included for both films, I will not be spending twice the amount of money to see a butchered version of the movie that is only half of what it was in the theater.

I can pretty much guarantee that 6 months to a year down the road we’ll be seeing a restored verion of Grindhouse that includes both PT and DP as one film along with the trailers in between. Then maybe I’ll pick it up. But to be honest, the studio has f’d up this campaign from the beginning, that I’m not sure I can support it. On one hand I really love this movie and want to see it again and again and would love to support it, but on the other, I don’t want to encourage studios to do this sort of thing. So as of now, I won’t be purchasing the hacked up version of the movie. If it comes out the way it should in the future, I may decide otherwise. But until then I am boycotting this pathetic excuse of a DVD release.

American Beauty Redux?

copy and paste job from Fox News:

Leo and Kate back together     Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, who made history and chemistry together in “Titanic,” are coming back to the silver screen.

The pair, sources say, have signed on for Winslet’s husband Sam Mendes’ film version of Richard Yates’ classic novel of unhappy domesticity in the suburbs.

No, it’s not called “American Beauty.” Mendes already made that movie, and it won the Oscar. It’s “Revolutionary Road,” the 1961 novel many people thought “American Beauty” was based on or borrowed from in the first place.

I do recall asking “American Beauty” screenwriter Alan Ball back when his movie was coming out if he’d been influenced by the Yates novel. He professed to not having read it.

Guy Ritchie and The Gamekeeper

What a Guy.     Never did get around to seeing Guy Ritchie’s last film, Revolver. But after the greatness that was Lock Stock and Snatch, I’m more than eager to see his return to film making. I also never saw the remake of Lina Wertmuller’s 1974 comedy-drama Swept Away which starred Madonna and was also directed by Ritchie. Word is that it is atrocious though.

Anyway, reports today indicate Guy Ritchie has just been assigned to direct The Gamekeeper for Warner Bros. studios. Apparently this is his comic book series? Well, once RocknRolla is finished filming (which looks like classic Ritchie returning to his roots), he’ll be moving on to this new project.

I’m not one for comic book films, but since this isn’t a super hero movie and since Ritchie produces these comics himself (ala Frank Miller - Sin City, 300), I’m very much looking forward to Ritchie getting back on the horse, so to speak.

here’s the plot outline from monsters and critics:

”…the story features a gamekeeper on a Scottish estate with a dark past. When his secrets return to haunt him, and the alleged killer of his son reappears, the gamekeeper uses all his tracking and nature skills to hunt down his prey, wherever they go.”

Katie Sachoff as The Bionic Woman

Katie Sachoff is not just Starbuck anymore.     Anyone who watches Battlestar Galactica knows her as Starbuck, but Katie Sachoff has apparently just signed a one year deal with NBC to play in the new show “The Bionic Woman.” Apparently the pilot aired last fall, but I never saw it. Sachoff plays the evil bionic woman and according to The Hollywood Reporter, via MovieWeb has agreed to appear on “future episodes.” Apparently she was just about prepared to walk out on the project but just today made a last minute deal and will stay with the show.

I know this isn’t really movie related, but I’m a big fan of the “Battlestar” series and Sachoff is a big reason for that. I wonder how playing on another show simultaneously might affect the other show. Did anyone see the pilot and thinks this a good move or a bad move?

Could it Get Any Worse?

A couple days ago, we posted the story of an Ace Ventura Jr movie. Now I come to find through bloddydisgusting that ANOTHER f’ing Saw movie is in the works? Oh wait, not just one but TWO! This means there wil be a Saw V and VI. My day just took a nose dive for the worse with this news. The films will be directed, apparently, by David Hackl; the production designer on Saw II, Saw III and Saw IV and second unit director on Saw II and Saw IV.

I don’t see how anyone could possibly be interested in these films. The first one was a pretty damn good movie: original, twisty, scary and gory all in one. The rest have just made me wanna puke with the amount of stupidity involved. It’s bad enough a fourth film is coming. Now a fifth and sixth? What is this world coming to?

IMDb Movie Synopsis

IMDb - the place to go for movie info (bar none)     The Internet Movie Database, where pretty much everyone goes for their movie info needs, has introduced a new feature that is quite interesting. They call it the movie synopsis. This is a new feature in which under every film title’s profile page, you can click on “plot synopsis” and a page will pop up that pretty much describes the ENTIRE movie for you point for point.

As I browsed movie titles I noticed that very few of these synopsis’ (what is the plural of synopsis? synopses? synposi?) have actually been written yet, but I think as the service grows older we’ll start to see more and more of them.

These are generally fan or user written synopsis’ that include everything about the film; INCLUDING SPOILERS. Kind of a neat little attribute IMDb has added here and will be sort of the Cliff’s Notes for a film. Very interesting I think. We’ll see how accurate they are as time goes on.

On their main page, they give The Matrix synopsis as their example. I found a couple more like Star Wars and Jaws. Here is the full synopsis for Kubrick’s The Shining. Remember that this includes the whole story of the film and therefore INCLUDES SPOILERS! Having said that, you can skim the first couple paragraphs and nothing will be ruined for you, but you can at least get a sense of the feel for a synopsis. Or head over to IMDb and look at the synopsis for a movie you’ve already seen. Unwrap the text below to get an idea of what this new “IMDb Synopsis” is all about.

Bourne’s Movie Marketing

Catch Bourne     With the net being alive with Cloverfield rumors, puzzles and links, it seems to have given studios and fans new ideas on how to market a film. The latest for The Bourne Ultimatum sounds kind of intriguing; albeit a little too much work for me.

Movieweb is reporting that starting Monday, July 16th, Google and Universal pictures have set up a system that allows you to log onto the intrawebs and “track” Bourne utilizing Google Search, Maps, Earth, Images, Translate and YouTube. According to the story,

…players will track Bourne online, in the hopes that what he knows will prove helpful in their own quests. With new clues and active game play provided to site visitors each weekday — 15 in total — the game concludes on the film’s opening day. Along the way, registered users will have the chance to win amazing prizes, including the grand prize: a 2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2, designed to the specifications of the car seen in the film, as well as a four-city trip to international destinations featured in the movie and $25,000.

Starting Monday, you’ll be able to sign up for free and gain access to exclusive clips as you prgress through the game. It sounds like too much work for me to care (especially since I think the whole franchise is a bit over-rated anyway). But I’ll definitely at least check it out on Monday and see how it starts.

You too can play by signing up over at http://www.google.com/bourne. If you’re not in USA or Canada, there’s an alternate version of the game for you too. Just make sure to use the drop down menu on the main page to select your country.

Once this thing takes off, I’d love to hear people’s findings and experiences as they play this game. If it turns out to be kind of cool and if I can keep the boss off my back long enough, I may decide to go ahead and track Bourne if it seems worth it. Anyone else have any interest in playing this “game”?

Vernon Again?

Behind the Mask     David J. Stieve, the co-writer of Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (that movie we keep mentioning because its so damn good) was chatting with Icons of Fright and he had the following to say about a possible sequel:

“Obviously the focus of that or the metaphor involved there, as it happened with Nathan as an actor or Scott as a director, or me as a writer, it’s how do you handle that ‘freshman phenom/rookie of the year’ type thing!” Stieve poses. “That’s the symbolism at play; how does Leslie handle his success? And of course you have the whole genre-specific constructions and conventions of a horror sequel. There’s specific conventions involved with every killer that comes back. How the town reacts, who the people are that survive, and who fills what role coming around again…so there are all these very specific genre expectations for a sequel that are ripe for the picking but there’s obviously the metaphor of how does Leslie as the ‘artist’ handle his fame, does he handle it well, does he burn out too quick, keep himself in check, does he do it right? There’s a very rich soil to till from a storytelling standpoint.”

Now while I would love to see a sequel and while I hate how much of a limited run this hidden gem was given I just can’t see it happening unless it really does well on DVD. My hope is that it does do well and I’m going to do what I can by pointing people towards it but I unfortunately feel that Stieve is just talking about something he would like to do if possible. Maybe I’m wrong and maybe the sequel is being planned already. If it is all I have to say is hell yeah I’ll be there in line to see it!

Flicks Through Xbox Live

Starting yesterday, you can now download movies using your video game console. Microsoft and Xbox Live have signed a partnership with Disney Studios (which includes Touchstone Pictures, Hollywood Pictures and Miramax Films) to allow Xbox Live customers to rent these films as soon as they become available. Already available are titles such as Bridge to Terabithia, Miramax Film’s The Queen, Pan’s Labyrinth, The Fountain and Touchstone Pictures’ Déjà Vu. The movie can be downloaded in both standard and hi-def formats. Xbox live is the only market right now offering downloadable films in Hi-Def.

From the Xblox Live website:

Currently offering more than 2,350 hours of premium entertainment content from 15 partners, Xbox LIVE Marketplace is the only online service offering downloadable movies and TV shows in high definition. In a little more than seven months since video content was launched on Xbox LIVE Marketplace, there have been nearly 10 million downloads of entertainment content.

High-definition new-release movie rentals are 480 Microsoft Points each, and standard-definition new-release movie rentals are 320 Microsoft Points each. Classic feature films in high definition are 360 Microsoft Points each, and classic feature films in standard definition are 240 Microsoft Points. Guess what? I have no idea what this translates to in dollars, pounds or Rubles. I also don’t know what “renting” means. How long do you get to keep the download for would be my question. And Since I’m a lazy ass and have to go to a concert now, i’ll let you guys research that for me and put it in the comment section.

I don’t have an Xbox 360 anyway, so…

Footloose Remake

Kevin Bacon?     The title of this post is enough said, but here’s more anyway. I found this over at worstpreviews. Apparently this is going to be a full blown musical starring Zac Efron (some teen heart throb apparently) taking over the Kevin Bacon role and directed by Kenny Ortega (Newsies, Hocus Pocus and a bunch of crap TV shows). This is beyond lame. I don’t want to write anymore.

3:10 to Yuma Opening Early!

Originally scheduled to open on Oct 5th, Lions Gate has pushed 3:10 to Yuma ahead by a full month and will now see its wide release on Sept. 7th. According to Movieweb, the producers wanted to get Yuma in theaters before any other westerns this fall; specifically Brad Pitt’s The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Lionsgate films’ Tom Ortenberg said this:

”We certainly wanted to be the first Western in the marketplace. More importantly, in what is shaping up to be a very impressive and crowded field of upscale commercial motion pictures this fall, we wanted to be one of the first ones out, so that everything else will be measured against us.”

I’m not sure what Ortenberg has to do with Yuma. He’s a producer of various films, but I can’t find his name attached to Yuma anywhere. Still, he’s obviously in the know and has an obvious point. I find that when two movies of similar genre or storyline come out, most people seem to believe that in 90% of the cases, the one they saw first is the superior film.

Even though I’m usually adverse to remakes of already great movies, this one looks to be fantastic (admittedly I’m a sucker for contemporary westerns). If you’ve not seen the trailer, here it is. And remember, you can now see the film a full month earlier. Nice!

More Villians for Dark Knight?

The Dark Knight     Film ick has broke the story that another villian will be present in the Dark Knight. That villian is none other than Edward Nygma. If you aren’t up on your Batman villians. Nygma is the Riddler.

They also mention that Aaron Eckhart was seen in two face makeup:

Here’s the description of the make-up:

55/40. Scarring across the nose just a tad bit. One of his eye is deformed. And little bubbles across the scarring (They’re manips that look similar). Wicked cool.

55/40? What’s the remaining 5?

Is it just me or does it seem that there are going to be just too many bad guys once again in another superhero movie? I guess we don’t actually have anything that says Harvey Dent becomes the evil Two Face or that Nygma becomes the Riddler. Perhaps the story will focus on the Joker and just set up sequels with Two Face and Riddler. That is my hope.

‘Bullitt’ Remake On It’s Way Even Sooner?

My question is - since when is there going to be a ‘Bullitt’ remake? Sorry if I am just not up-to-date with every piece of news but I hadn’t heard a single thing about there being a remake of it. And for those of you in the same boat as me; here is what’s going on with it:

Brad Pitt will be starring as Lt Frank Bullitt originally played by cinema legend Steve McQueen. He has been linked to the film since 2003 but the project has only just recently “been given the green-light as film bosses desperately try to kick-start as many movies as possible before the Screen Actors Guild begin their anticipated strike action.”

Bullitt

Now I am probably in the minority here but I have yet to see the “classic” 1960’s version of the movie so I can’t say whether a remake would be any good or even needs made.

But for those who have; what do you think of them remaking it?

A Watchman Website?

Watchmen

Dtheatre posted up a link to a new Watchmen (IMDB) site (actual site) earlier today. I’ve also done some browsing around and a few other sites are reporting this story.

I did a little investigating around on the site. Currently the site is just a black screen with a full version of the image I posted above on it. It has a link that goes to an email address of rorschach@rorschachsjournal.com. Nothing too interesting so far. By digging into the source I discovered that the page is actually just a framed page that contains another page. That page reveals some interesting things. First the page title and the alt tage for the image is as follows:

-.– — ..- / .-. . — .. -. -.. / — . / — ..-. / .– . .- - …. . .-. -… . . .-.-.- / .. / -.. — -. .—-. - / .-.. .. -.- . / -.– — ..-

It took me a couple of seconds but I realized this is probably morse code. Sure enough when I headed over to an online morse code generator I discovered that it says

YOU REMIND ME OF WEATHERBEE. I DON’T LIKE YOU

I still haven’t read (it is on my list) Watchmen so I can’t comment on what that actually means. Hopefully someone else can who has read the comic.

Okay now the important stuff.

The background music for the site is located at: theonering.net and the image is actually sitting on the type40marketing.com server. If you click the links and contact link you’ll see that the site is run by Michael Regina out of Kirkland Quebec and that he links to a bunch of fan sites (including TheOneRing).

I hate to say it but I’m thinking rorschachsjournal.com is just a fan site getting some early publicity.

Joel Siegel (1943-2007)

from the AP and Newsday.com:

Joel Siegel (dead at age 65)     ABC’s most recognizable film critic, Joel Siegel of Good Morning America died Friday after a bout with Colon Cancer. He was 63.

Siegel had a bunch of Emmy awards for his journalism and he’s been around forever. He’s one of those critics that I remember from when I was a kid; back when there was only a handful of critics and you had to choose one of them. There were Siskel & Ebert, Gene Shalit, Leonard Maltin and Joel Sigel. Sure there were more, but these were the ones everybody paid attention to.

What I remember most about Siegel (unfortunately maybe) is his spat with Kevin Smith a year or two ago in which Siegel stormed out of “Clerks II” shouting expletives that it was the worst movie he’d ever seen and was the first film he’d walked out of in 20 years - or something to that effect. Smith discussed it with him on a live radio broadcast later on and the moment is pretty much gold. Here’s the audio from that broadcast:

icon for podpress  Joel Siegel vs Kevin Smith [15:03m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download

As much as he kind of came off like an ass in that whole debacle, his reviews were taken pretty seriously and he definitely carried some clout in the world of critics. His stories were witty and his critiques relentless. He seemed like a naturally decent guy and this news is just… too bad. It’s truly sad especially in the critics world, so hat’s off to you sir - you were one of a kind and wil be missed by many.

Women’s Rebuttal to AFI

Sally Field in Norma Rae     After the release of AFI’s Top 100 list last week, lots of discussion and debate kicked up surrounding the AFI’s final results. Though mostly predictable and somewhat obvious, it’s still fun to argue about and question.

One group that really got into the question was The Alliance of Women Film Journalists (I didn’t know there was such a thing). The AWFJ got together and concocted their own list of films they thought were of a standard high enough to be included in a top 100 of all time list. Apparently, they didn’t have any rules like women directors only or feminist films, they just wanted to see what would happen when they put their favorites together. Would it automatically include more films directed by and starring strong females or have more of a feminist plotline? You decide…

Thanks to Kurt for pointing me to the story. Here’s the list via Cinematical.

THE ACCUSED (1988): Somewhat based on the true story of a 1983 gang rape of a woman at a New Bedford, Mass., bar, the movie stars Jodie Foster (her first Oscar) as the sexually provocative and damn near indomitable working-class victim who refuses to go whimpering into her trailer and pretend it never happened. Her performance is both vibrant and vitriolic, while still conveying, in the film’s bleakest moments, the embers of fear and resignation that remain after white-hot anger fades. (Eleanor Ringel Gillespie)

ADAM’S RIB (1949): Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy triumphantly play out the battle of the sexes, as lawyers with gender inflected ideas about the law. (Martha P. Nochimson)

THE AFRICAN QUEEN (1951): Quintessential Hepburn/Bogart matchup in a leaky steam vessel on the Lumbasi River. Not only can Kate’s classic Presbyterian spinster, Rose Sayer, hang with the toughest of men, her wit and intelligent determination lift the level of discourse. Despite the leeches and broken props, Sayer never compromises her personal beliefs. (Sheigh Crabtree)

ALL ABOUT EVE (1950): Fasten your seatbelts for Bette Davis as the aging Broadway diva who has everything but wants more, balancing love and work as her conniving protégée Anne Baxter makes life turbulent. (Carrie Rickey)

ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER (1999): All the world’s a stage in Pedro Almodovar’s Oscar-winner, which represents the full flowering of his trademark “screwball melodrama” style as he weaves wildly disparate elements into a hilarious, compassionate and utterly unforgettable whole. (Carol Cling)

ALICE DOESN’T LIVE HERE ANYMORE (1974): Scorsese’s rare moment of being in touch with his feminine side. (Susan Wlosczyzna)

ALIEN (1979): Still the reigning action film that neither exploits nor over-feminize its no-nonsense, take-charge heroine (SW)

AN ANGEL AT MY TABLE (1990): Stunning biopic of New Zealand’s Janet Frame, misdiagnosed as a schizophrenic, who emerges as her island nation’s literary eminence in Jane Campion’s portrait, prickly as it is plush — just like its subject. (CR)

AN UNMARRIED WOMAN (1978): Almost laughable in some ways now (really, she LEAVES the wonderful Alan Bates?) but a groundbreaker in taking women’s issues seriously at the time. (SW)

AMELIE (2001): Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s aggressively sunny romance pits a quirky wallflower (Audrey Tatou, Olive Oyl’s flesh-and-blood cousine) against the troubles of the world and the wallflower wins, brightening the lives of her Montmartre neighbors and even finding a love as eccentric as she. Gloriously nutty valentine to oddballs everywhere or sickeningly sweet French pastry? Count me among the besotted: Jeunet’s digitally tweaked and sweetened Paris is whimsical perfection and Tatou’s crooked smile could turn vinegar to honey. (Maitland McDonagh)

UNWRAP TEXT or SHOW **SPOILER**

You’ve still got the obvious choices in here like Casablanca, Citizen Kane and E.T., but clearly the list is full of stories that revolve around women standing up for themselves or who play a strong part in the story. I think that’s great and not really surprising.

I sort of like the fact that its in alphabetical order too and not ranked; so no film is really considered greater than another (though many clearly are). Still, I would’ve liked to see what they consider the best, or at least given us the top ten. I make lists for everything and would like to see what they think.

As for the specifics of the list, it’s hard to argue with most of the titles on here as film is subjective and it was put together by a lot of X chromosomes working overtime. I especially appreciate (and was a little surprised by) great foreign films like Raise the Red Lantern and Volver (among others) included here. I have to take a little exception though, with films like Bend it Like Beckham and A League of their Own. Really!? I mean, I like these movies (actually, I like A League quite a lot) but in the 100 GREATEST films of all time? Clueless? C’mon, there’s something more going on here than creating an honest list. There’s obviously an agenda here. Sure they’re female journalists, but to me this list seems a little “over the top” in its feminist ambition. Not that I’m opposed to that, but I wish it was just made clear and they were a bit more truthful about it.

Admittedly there’s a bunch of films on here I’ve not seen, but I know what great cinema is and what isn’t. Nearly all of the films on here are wonderful films and I (personally) think about 50% of them are worthy to be on a Top 100 list. But no Kubrick films? No Kurosawa? Whatever. It’s an interesting list to be sure, but not one I’m going to rely on as difinitive (nor did they intend it to be).

What do you think? Am I totally wrong here?

Hitchcock’s “Lodger” is set for a Remake

Alfred Hitchcock     Alfred Hitchcock’s first film is set for a remake by David Ondaatje. My first question upon hearing this was just who is Ondaatje. So far he has written a documentary on Hitchcock called Undressing Hitchcock and a short dark comedy called Waiting for Dr. MacGuffin.

I’ll have to head out and check out Lodger now. It has definitely been long enough for there to be a remake, the original was filmed in 1927 and even though I’m not huge Hitchcock buff I hadn’t heard about this one before now. I’ll be interested to see how this comes out.

Reuters via Yahoo! News
has a brief synopsis of the movie:

”The Lodger” was based on the true story of the hysteria caused by the Jack the Ripper’s killing spree that took place over several weeks in 1888. Ondaatje’s adaptation is broken into two converging plot lines set in present-day Los Angeles. The first involves an uneasy relationship between a psychologically unstable landlady and her enigmatic lodger, and the second is about a troubled detective engaged in a cat-and-mouse game with an unknown killer.
