Pride and Glory Trailer

Edward Norton and Colin Farrel in Pride and Glory     The great Edward Norton has scared me lately with his decision to play the title role in the Hulk sequel. I guess everyone needs a paycheck, but seriously, someone as terrific as Norton could surely find something better right? Well thankfully, it looks like he might’ve sort of gotten back on track after seeing the recently released trailer for Pride and Glory. Brought to us by the same screenwriters who are sort of hit or miss with the likes of Miracle, NARC and Smokin’ Aces, the movie has potential to be either really good or really bad. With Norton and Colin Farrel on board, as well as Jon Voight and Noah Emmerich (Little Children), I lean more towards really good.

I couldn’t find an embeddable trailer yet, so head on over to WorstPreviews.com and check out this trailer of fairly decent quality of Pride and Glory. Then come back over and let us know what you think.

Update - thanks to CinemaFusion, I tracked down the YouTube version of the trailer. Enjoy…

Free Movies!

I‘m not really one to promote piracy or illegal activities, but ya know what? This is 2007, I’ve been partying all night and I don’t care right now… lucky you. I ran across this site today that is very similar to YouTube, except it’s all full length movies. That’s right FULL length motion pictures. Not just lame, unheard of movies either; but quite a large site with TONS of titles to choose from.

I’ve not exactly scoured their archives, but it looks to me like they have quite an extensive catalog with fairly high quality DVD rips. The newest films are lame theater-cams that I’m not sure you’d want to waste your time with, but they’re there if you want them. I’ve been meaning to revisit Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain again as I think it is extremely over-rated and I wanted to try it again to figure out what I was missing. The quality of these slightly older films is perfectly acceptable and I also found Blood Car! Blood Car (our review) was my silver medal winner for the Toronto After Dark Film Festival this year (2007) and I highly recommend checking it out.

But go ahead - search for your self and stream whatever movie you want. I’ll be surprised if this site is up for much longer. But hey, for now, it’s a lot cheaper than BB or Netflix. The name of the site is Film Hill.

Have fun and leave good finds or suggestions in the comment section below!

The Running Tunnel

So I stopped by FilmJunk today during my web movie rounds and stumbled upon their movie entitled The Running Tunnel. I guess it’s been around for a while and I’ve neglected my duties in seeing it. Check out the movie below and then head over to FilmJunk and let ‘em know what you thought. I personally think it’s pretty damn funny and I love the “grindhouse” look of the film - as though it has aged for a year or three. To the filmjunk crew: Hilarious! Keep em coming.

KMSU 12 Hour Film Festival

I know this won’t be relevant to most of the readers here, but anyone who lives in the southern part of Minnesota need to head over to Minnesota State University campus at Mankato to check out their oldies, but goodies 12 hour film festival. A dontaion of just $20 gets you in… and just check out the lineup up films you get to see on the BIG SCREEN for your twenty bucks!…

NOON - This Is Spinal Tap
One of the funniest and most quotable films of all time. Easily in my top ten comedies and the original mockumentary.

1:40- Dr. Strangelove
In my top 5 films of all time. Kubrick rules all.

3:30 - Gimme Shelter
Haven’t seen this yet, but funny enough this is the topic of discussion for next week’s Movie Club Podcast. So this is a great opportunity to see it the way it was meant to be seen and know what the hell we’re talking about on the show next week!

5:00 - One Hour Break
Grab some food, stretch your legs, or enjoy the trailers and film shorts running.

6:10 - Animal House
Amazingly enough, I have not seen this. Good time and place to finally see it though eh?

8:15 - Shaun Of The Dead
Also in my top 50, one of the most original and funny movies of the last decade. Pegg and Frost are dynamite together. Zombies and comedy. How can you go wrong?

10:00 - Blue Velvet
Not my favorite in the Lynch series, but certainly a must see. Dennis Hopper is ridiculous in this. It’ll be fun late at night too.

You can visit the KMSU Film Fest Official Page for all the details on where to go and how to get tickets. They also have embedded trailers for all the above films. So it’s worth stopping by just for the Spinal Tap trailer.

~~ THIS SATURDAY at NOON. SEE YOU THERE! ~~

After Dark Recap

Wow! LOADS of fun at this year’s Toronto After Dark Film Festival. As you could see from other posts here and there, there were a lot of fun people to chat with and get drunk with. Although the film selections this year weren’t quite as strong as they were in 2006, I still had a blast and spent entirely too much money on fun fun fun.

On to the movies. As I said, not as strong as last year. There were several really good movies, but no really great titles like last year’s Funky Forest or Behind the Mask. That being said, there were a lot of good things to see and my personal awards go as follows:

GOLD: Alone - this was a close call, but the higher budget, great story and sleeker look finally won me over. Especially when this type of film isn’t usually my thing.
SILVER: Blood Car - amazing what a fella can do with such a minimal budget. Funny funny funny. One of the best experiences in the theater at TAD this year.
BRONZE: Mulberry Street - a terrific zombie picture that really picks apart (no pun intended) the lead characters with almost no budget. The stars and director showing up was a big plus.
- honorable mention: Murder Party - not Behind the Mask, but what a way to close the festival! Great acting and a unique story was really fun. Again, kudos to the producer/main star to show up and get drunk with us at the closing party.

With these fun movies also come some duds. Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead was one such dud. One of the worst movies I’ve ever seen, but with the midnight festival crowd it became more fun than anticipated and worth every penny. I can’t say the same for Crispin Glover in Simon Says. This was hands down the worst movie I have seen all year and I pretty much loathed every poorly acted second of it. But again, some of these duds are actually what make the festival experience fun because it provides for great conversation and debate, plus they make that next movie on the docket that much more enjoyable.

Meeting new people and/or meeting people that I’ve known for a while, but finally face to face is the real treat at TAD. Seeing Kurt (Cinecast co-host), John Allison filmgrotto (and MP blogger), Serena from themovieblog, Sarah (Pop Journalism), Jay from DVDwolf, Steven from Filmopia, Mack and Todd from Twitch, Leah from Anchor Bay, Bob the Builder zombie dude (can’t remember his name, but a good guy), Jay Cheel from FilmJunk and so many more new faces and friends and I can hardly count them all on ten hands.

I really encourage all to check out this Festival if you have the means next year. It’s a fun and intimate festival with a great director and terrific programmers. I can’t wait to see the lineup for next year already. You can see synopsis’ and reviews for all the titles over at Movie Patron’s TAD headquarters. If you’re into martial arts, zombies, slashers, original and zany comedies, unique documentaries or fantastical animation, I highly encourage you to stop in. There’s something in this line-up for nearly everyone!

AFI Fest Complete Line-Up

I haven’t been following this too closely (because I can’t go); but AFI constantly sends me emails about their big festival coming up. I have to admit, the lineup is is a lot cooler than the After Dark lineup, but that should be obvious. Anyway, if you’re in the Los Angeles area between November 1st and 11th, you may want to check out the full line-up and schedule and purchase (fairly inexpensive) tickets right online.

For full lineup and schedule, CLICK HERE. Some of the many films (many of them world and/or US premiers) showing throughout the festival include:

Biggies:
LIONS FOR LAMBS
JUNO
THE TRACEY FRAGMENTS
WITH YOUR PERMISSION
THE SAVAGES
4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS, 2 DAYS (2007 Cannes winner)
DEFICIT (my boy, Gael Garcia Bernal’s directorial debut)

Free B-Movies

moviearchive.gif     Last night I was dinking around in the iTunes store looking for various audio and video podcasts to put on my iPod for the trip up to Toronto for the After Dark Fest. I came across one completely free video podcast called Cult of UHF. Each month a new full length B-movie of yesteryear is added for a fee download.

Many of the titles I hadn’t heard of, but many I had like Plan Nine from Outer Space and the original Night of the Living Dead. Many other too; including Little Shop of Horrors, House on Haunted Hill and Reefer Madness. There’s a bunch of Kung-fu movies there as well if that’s your thing. Some whacky titles I hadn’t heard of like Jesse James Meets Frankenstein’s Daughter and Destroy all Planets. There’re a ton more and I recommend you check it out. Especially if you have a video iPod, as these are formatted and all ready to go to your mp3 player.

As a side note, Kurt sent me a link to another public domain movie site with all sorts of crazy shit you can download for FREE, like the original White Zombie or The Grass is Greener starring Cary Grant, Robert Mitchum and Jean Simmons.

Enjoy!

V

v.gifV     Probably my favorite mini-series of all time was “V”. For all you kids out there, a mini-series was a multi-evening movie that was usually a pretty special thing back when we only had 4 or 5 channels to choose from.

Anyway, “V” was a 4 or 5 night event in which aliens show up over planet earth and look remarkably like us. They promise us technology and medicine and a better way of life. But we soon find out that they’re really carnivorous reptilians and their real goal is to enslave humans and steal all of the water from our planet. A small band of resistance fighters catch on to the aliens’ plan and decide to strike back. Marc Singer (i.e. The Beastmaster) leads the pack. Along with Robert Englund, Faye Grant and the full awesomeness of Michael Ironside. It’s very similar to 1996 Independence Day (ID4)… or more accurately ID4 is similar to V. Since “V” was so awesome and was such a phenomenon, this is maybe partly why I like ID4 so much.

After the mini-series finale, there was a short lived TV series based on the same idea that totally reaked ass. The show was cancelled and the phenom died off. Over the years though, ideas and propositions for TV and films have bubbled up here and there, then die off just as quickly as they were conceived.

novel of V sequel     So now, almost 25 years later, Vic over at ScreenRant is reporting that a book is due to hit shelves in a couple of months entitled “V:The Second Generation” and is based off the ideas and scripts that sprang up from the aforementioned spin-off.

from ScreenRant:

The most interesting part? It remains listed as “currently being developed for TV” and, after contacting Kenneth Johnson, it appears there’s some truth in this. When asked whether a big-screen production or perhaps a straight-to-DVD release may be on the cards, Johnson confirmed “all options are open and we are pursuing them” but that straight-to-DVD is “unlikely” due to “the high production cost”.

Now first off, I am all about this. I’ve been waiting for V to return for many years and it sort of did in the way of ID4. But that was that. I have heard rumors of a sequel to ID4, but nothing has ever come to fruition. As much as I look foreward to this though, it won’t be as cool as it was when I was 8 and without badass Marc Singer and Michael Ironside, it just won’t be the same. Still, I’m itching to see how it works out. And on the other hand, who’s to say Singer and Ironside couldn’t return. They’re not that old. Of course, it will all depend on the substance and story arc of the novel I guess. I’ll be reading when this thing hits shelves on Nov. 7.

3:10 To Yuma Interview With Bale and Crowe

I just came across this interview, over at MTV.com, with Christian Bale and Russell Crowe where they talk about the very much anticipated movie 3:10 To Yuma. The interview is insightful, particularly into the relationship between the two actors and why they decided to do this film in particular. Here is a excerpt, which is the funniest part of the interview:

Bale and Crowe MTV interview

MTV: I can only assume that the two of you are as fascinated watching each other act as we in the audience are …

Crowe: [He glances at Bale with a grin.] I was fascinated watching you work!

Bale: We would just be stunned! Stunned into silence looking at each other!

Crowe: I was a stunned mullet.

Bale: [Sarcastically pretending he’s on set] “Oh, I’m sorry, was that my line? I didn’t realize. I was so stunned by your performance.”

TIFF Too Tough? Try Todd’s Twitch TIFF Trailers

If you’re overwhelmed with the sheer amount of possibilities at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, Todd over at Twitchfilm has meticulously gone through each title and found the link to the title’s official web site or trailer (or both). It’s been really easy to check out all the films playing and see what they’re about via the trailers. Good work Todd. head on over to the “one stop trailer shop” at Twitch.

31 Days of Spielberg

It’s been a long time since I’ve just sat down and surfed the internet. I usually go to all my usual sites and check out the news and so forth. But today, I started in one spot and just starting following links around. It’s fun to see where you end up. While surfing, I ran across something blog worthy. Over at Windmills of my Mind, Damian Arlyn is taking on the task of “31 Days of Spielberg, in which he picks a different SPielberg film each day to dissect and review. And when I dissect, I mean this guy really delves pretty deeply into each film. Pages and pages of dissection actually.

As of this writing, he seems to be about half way through the schedule, which goes as follows:

DAY 1: Prologue
DAY 2: Night Gallery – “Eyes”
DAY 3: Columbo: Murder By the Book
DAY 4: Duel
DAY 5: The Sugarland Express
DAY 6: Jaws
DAY 7: Close Encounters of the Third Kind
DAY 8: 1941
DAY 9: Raiders of the Lost Ark
DAY 10: Poltergeist
DAY 11: E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial
DAY 12: Twilight Zone: the Movie – “Kick the Can”
DAY 13: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
DAY 14: Amazing Stories – “Ghost Train” & “The Mission”
DAY 15: The Color Purple
DAY 16: Empire of the Sun
DAY 17: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
DAY 18: Always
DAY 19: Hook
DAY 20: Jurassic Park
DAY 21: Schindler’s List
DAY 22: The Lost World: Jurassic Park
DAY 23: Amistad
DAY 24: Saving Private Ryan
DAY 25: A.I.: Artifical Intelligence
DAY 26: Minority Report
DAY 27: Catch Me If You Can
DAY 28: The Terminal
DAY 29: War of the Worlds
DAY 30: Munich
DAY 31: Epilogue

I’m not taking the time to link to each title, but you can just head over to the main URL or start right at DAY 1: Prefatory Remarks & Pre-history and go from there. You’ll be reading for a while, but it seems to me to be worth the time spent. Excellent pieces that are both interesting and highly informative. I had no idea E.T. would have never happened without the guiding hand of Truffant! Check it out.

Be Kind Rewind Trailer

Michel Gondry is a genius. No doubt about it. That word gets tossed around a lot these days, but with Gondry, I really believe it to be true. The man truly is a visionary and breaks the mold of how Hollywood traditionally makes a film.

His newest release, Be Kind Rewind stars Jack Black as a video store clerk who’s brain gets somehow magnetized, thereby erasing all of the tapes in the store. Instead of re-buying all the movies, he and his co-worker (Mos Def) decide to just refilm all the movies in the own way. It is frakking brilliant.

Today the trailer for the movie was released and I gotta tell ya, I cannot WAIT for this movie. It looks to possibly be Gondry’s best work. It gets my ten bucks in a heart beat. Check the streaming version below or head over to Yahoo! for a larger version and hi-def versions and thanks to Marina for the heads up.

Fake Trailer Contest

With Planet Terror finally hitting other parts of the world soon, Tarantino himself is judging some of the fake trailers that will be show with the films. In the Netherlands, here are some of the nominees that QT will be judging. Not exactly sure how the whole thing works since the web site is not in English, but somehow votes are taken into considerations as well.

So anyway, you can head over to http://www.planetterror.nl/faketrailer/ and take a look at all the nominees. Just click on the thumbnail image to see the streaming video, or hit the button to tally a vote for any video you choose.

Most of them are pretty stupid. Nailed By Nikita seems to be getting the highest praise so far and it looks to be pretty heavily inspired by Hobo with a Shotgun - the fake trailer only showed to Canadian audiences.

Head over to that foreign site to see them all, but here’s one I had to vote for for obvious reasons entitled Bloody Andrew:

Create Your Own Simpsons Character!

I don’t know if this is old news but since I just came across it I thought I would mention it here. Through people doing it on FaceBook I went over to The Simpsons official website and created my very own character. It’s a fun, probably useless way to spend some of your precious time. Head on over to The Simpsons Official Website to create your own character and if possible post them here. Here is mine:

The First Official Trailer for The Dark Knight

Earlier today I did a couple of posts about the new site related to The Dark Knight. The countdown finished and a new page came up. Well - again user “Colin” - pointed me back towards that page a little while ago and to my suprise I found that it had changed. On the page is gave you a picture of a Gotham City Police Report saying that the Joker was dead but it was clearly a joke in and of itself to get the police to back down and stop looking for the Joker. Anyway upon browsing the page I saw a little flickering box next to part of the text and decided to click on it and to my surprise and sheer delight it was a teaser trailer. Here is instructions on how to see it:

  • Go to www.whysoserious.com
  • Click the little flickering box shown next to the arrow in the following picture:

The Dark Knight trailer instruction screenshot

  • Enjoy the PERFECT teaser trailer for what is shaping up to be one heck of a movie!

EDIT:

Or you can watch the smaller, inferior version of the trailer, but I encourage you to watch the bigger on on the site, here:

Movie Quote Contest Site

Here’s a site I used to travel to way back in the day (at least 10 years ago). It’s been around forever and is a cool site. I completely forgot about it until I remembered it in a dream I had last night…

MovieQuote.net

There are nine genres. Within each genre are ten movie quotes. Guess the quote correctly and you get to put in your own quote. Each quote has commentary and hints built in. It’s a fun time waster. Check it out.

Why So Serious?: Update - It’s a game

This is just an update as to what’s going on with the WhySoSerious? website I did a post about a few hours ago. When the countdown reached zero I tried refreshing the page and it took almost 5 minutes to load. Then suddenly another page appeared with another paragraph of instructions (written as if it’s the Joker who’s writing it) and a submit box below, presumably for input of a password.

WhySoSerious.com screenshot2

Also below that box there is a smaller sentence that says “My wannabes” and when you click on that this appears:

WhySoSerious.com screenshot3

The error message that appears I at first thought that it was something wrong with my computer but as I did it multiple times and it came up as the same thing I realize that it is on purpose. Or maybe you have to be within a certain range, of the location which I have now learned is in San Diego (across from the currently going on Comic Con), to gain access to the page.

If you have any information on it please leave a comment. Man, this ad campaign for The Dark Knight is killer!

Why So Serious?

                                                                       WhySoSerious.com screenshot

The Dark Knight is a film I am eagerly anticipating. Batman Begins was one of the best films I had seen in ages (and it now sits firmly within my top 20 films of all time) so this sequel I would literally kill to see. Just recently (today if I’m not mistaken) a new website promoting the film has went online - this one can be found at - www.whysoserious.com. It’s basically similar to website where we saw a picture of Aaron Eckhart as Gotham DA Harvey Dent only given a Joker makeover. This time round the website has a lot more to it, including a couple of paragraphs about hiring people for some sort of job - I am still unclear about it myself (And also some sort of countdown(?)). Head on over to the website and decide for yourself.

(Thanks to user “Colin” for the heads up on this)

IMDb Movie Synopsis

IMDb - the place to go for movie info (bar none)     The Internet Movie Database, where pretty much everyone goes for their movie info needs, has introduced a new feature that is quite interesting. They call it the movie synopsis. This is a new feature in which under every film title’s profile page, you can click on “plot synopsis” and a page will pop up that pretty much describes the ENTIRE movie for you point for point.

As I browsed movie titles I noticed that very few of these synopsis’ (what is the plural of synopsis? synopses? synposi?) have actually been written yet, but I think as the service grows older we’ll start to see more and more of them.

These are generally fan or user written synopsis’ that include everything about the film; INCLUDING SPOILERS. Kind of a neat little attribute IMDb has added here and will be sort of the Cliff’s Notes for a film. Very interesting I think. We’ll see how accurate they are as time goes on.

On their main page, they give The Matrix synopsis as their example. I found a couple more like Star Wars and Jaws. Here is the full synopsis for Kubrick’s The Shining. Remember that this includes the whole story of the film and therefore INCLUDES SPOILERS! Having said that, you can skim the first couple paragraphs and nothing will be ruined for you, but you can at least get a sense of the feel for a synopsis. Or head over to IMDb and look at the synopsis for a movie you’ve already seen. Unwrap the text below to get an idea of what this new “IMDb Synopsis” is all about.

UNWRAP TEXT or SHOW **SPOILER**
