Great show again guys. Enjoyed your discussion on Day Watch very much, wasn’t a fan AT ALL of Night Watch, don’t know why (I may have to watch it again) but am definitely looking forward to Day Watch after your review Andrew.
As per request here is Pixar’s films ranked (I haven’t seen a lot of them but the one’s I have seen I will list. I haven’t seen my numbers 6, 7 and 8 so I will put THEM in order of what I want to see most and then the rest are in the right order)
8) Finding Nemo - Absolutely no urge to see this movie whatsoever. I just don’t like the look of it, Elle Degeneres annoys the HELL out of me (so that’s a big factor in me not wanting to see it). I will maybe seek it out ONE DAY just for the sake of being able to say I have seen it but I am not looking forward to it at all.
7) Ratatouille - It’s not even close to coming out in the UK yet and the trailers haven’t got me all that excited. I am guessing you have to be a Pixar nut to appreciate everything that’s in the trailer and end up looking forward to it.
6) Cars - The trailers and everything look like the film is stunning to watch. But there is just something about it that hasn’t had me compelled to seek it out.
5) The Incredibles - Apart from Toy Story this is the Pixar film I remember most about and out of the ones I have seen it is DEFINITELY my least favourite of Pixar’s films (totally with you Andrew on the human element that you don’t like)
4) Toy Story 2 - A pretty good movie, imo, but nowhere NEAR as fun and enjoyable and likeable as the first one.
3) A Bugs Life - This is probably the Pixar film I remember the LEAST about but I just remember thinking it was very good and well done.
2) Monsters Inc. - Granted I don’t remember ALL of the film off the top of my head but I just remember liking it a lot. Really funny and sweet. John Goodman is always golden (as is one of my favourite actors Steve Buscemi). A great feel-good movie for anyone in a bad mood.
1) Toy Story -I can’t for the life of me see why EVERYONE thinks the sequel is better. Maybe it has something to do with the fact I have a MASSIVE soft spot of this one as it was probably in my top 3 favourite and most watched films as a kid. And I have only seen the sequel once or twice but man I can’t believe people say this is inferior. An amazing cast of voice actor - Tim Allen and Tom Hanks are genius in this movie. God I love every single second of this! By FAR my favourite Pixar film AND animated film. Period.
first off I really enjoy the show. I cant say I particularly come to this site for the text reviews, but when the two of you come together to talk about films, you have one of the best podcasts on the web.
I think overall during most reviews i tend to identify more with Kurts points of view, but Andrew always manages to get his point across, and you feed each other well to fully draw out a complete opinion on a movie.
Drew told me about the podcast during a FilmJunk talkshoe recording, and I came over and listening to the massively long Grindhouse review during an extremely long walk. I was disappointed in Death Proof and still prefer Planet Terror however you both convinced me Death Proof was worth a second chance, and I was glad I gave it.
In this show I was a little frustrated with Andrew basing his review on what he wants from Pixar vs. what was on screen, however it was still a good discussion.
Still my favorite parts of any of your shows are how you allow yourself to go on very long tangents and ignore setting yourself to a strict run time. It goes on as long as it needs to and I appreciate that.
Finally, the only other beef I think I ever had with any/both of you was during your Oscar discussion and the Departed bashing. I think seeing Infernal Affairs first taints many peoples opinion on the film, and your complaint about it winning the Oscar and being a ‘remake’ seemed a little narrow minded to me. A lot of us happen to think the Departed fully realized the IA storyline and fleshed it out better. Likewise, the new Battlestar Galactica is more likely to win an Emmy than the 70s series, and I would scoff at anyone who would disqualify its chances because its a remake.
one more thing. I am a Pixar hound, and was disappointed in Cars in both story and in its message. Something about its ‘country people are valuable!’ story was extremely ham handed in comparison to everything else they’ve done.
Goon, in regards to your Cars comment, I kind of agree with you and think your “ham handed” description actually fits pretty well. Still, I laughed alot throughout Cars and generally had a great time with the whole idea. To each his own I guess.
Ross, not too shocking that we agree. The Incredibles was… can’t put my finger on it, but not particularly interesting. I found my review that I wrote WAY back before I even had a website. I just wrote quick reviews for friends via email. I posted it online now (the last two sentences are pretty funny):
“Good. Not Great. I definitely think “Monsters, Inc.” and “Finding Nemo” were better. The Incredibles is the story of a family of super heroes who are left to face an arch nemesis because all of the other super heroes were killed. I think part of what detracted from the film was that the main characters were basically humans.Pixar has always made films about things that normally don’t have a personality (Toys, Monsters, Fish, etc…). Making it humans, albeit super-humans, made it like any other movie about people. I like to see the movie from a different perspective.
Secondly, the cast left something to be desired. I mean, I like Craig T. Nelson (Coach) and Holly Hunter; but they’re nothing special. And I’m sick of Samuel L. Jackson. Jason Lee was a bright spot, but he didn’t have a large role, or even a good role for that matter.
Another thing, I think Pixar is becoming too much like Disney. They used to release a movie every 3-4 years, and it was something special. Now they crank one out every 6 months to a year, and they get bogged down. Don’t get me wrong, I still liked it, but the wittiness that used to be there, gets slighted by the need to produce more films and make more money. They showed a preview for the new movie from Pixar coming soon: “Cars.” Looks good, but it’s coming soon, probably before Incredibles even hits video stores.
Every Pixar movie has a short film immediately preceding the feature length film. I always look forward to these, but this one was by far the worst of them all. It was cute, but I didn’t feel a spark of excitement. It was too Dr. Seuss-ie. Having said all this, I think it was a good, fun movie; but wait for the DVD. Then after watching the DVD, pop in Monsters, Inc., and see what a really good Pixar movie can be. The best thing about The Incredibles was the Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith trailer. I almost had an orgasm.”
Nice Co-incidence GOON. I believe I was just debating documentaries with you over at TMB…
Welcome and I’m glad you like the show. It is nice to know that people are actually listening and thinking about our little discussions.
And your criticisms of us on The Departed are very valid…In retrospect, I do think we were a little hard on the film, because I took an immense amount of pleasure watching Scorsese’s version which in many ways does stand on its own.
Again, I should have made a list but here goes:
1) Obviously, I love the show. I think the first show I listened to was the first show you and Kurt did together and your discussions have kept me coming back. I agree with Goon, one of the things I love best is that you do go off on tangents and don’t cut yourself short and I’ve never turned off one of the shows.
The show notes are excellent though I’ll admit I don’t always watch the trailers but otherwise, the rest of the information is excellent and I often go off and follow up on something you guys mentioned.
2) Onto Pixar…as I mentioned on Facebook, I’m not as passionate about Pixar as most others though I do have my favourites. I’ve pasted the list here so it would be the same. Though the top two are concrete, the others I’m not all that wild about and change with my mood.
5 - Toy Story
4 - The Incredibles
3 - A Bugs Life
2 - Monsters Inc.
1 - Finding Nemo
I love Monsters Inc. for all of the reasons you guys mentioned but I liked Finding Nemo even more because it was so cheesy and fun. I loved the segment with the turtles and the botched plans for getting out of the fishtank but I’m with Andrew on this one…the Ellen bit about speaking whale has me rolling in laughter. Every. Single. Time.
This may actually make me a bit unpopular but as much as I love some of the Pixar films, none of them will ever surpass what I think of as my “Golden Age of Disney” - the ones I grew up with. My favourites of the bunch are easily “Aladdin” and I still watch “The Little Mermaid” whenever I need a pick-me-up.
3) Day Watch was fantastic. Still trying to put together some sort of a review but I think I need to see it again to fully appreciate it. Now I also have to track down the Russian versions for the films. The husband is going to love that.
4) So how much do I owe you for the plug?
Seriously, thanks guys. Always nice to hear good things, especially when it’s for doing something you absolutely love. I actually heard that bit while sitting in a dark theater waiting for “Paprika” to begin (Andrew…you should watch this over “Once”). I think if anyone saw me they would have thought I was some crazy woman with a huge grin plastered on her face. Thanks again.
5) Homework…unfortunately, I’m going to take a pass on “Lady in the Water”. I’ve avoided it this long…However, I’m going to make an effort to track down a copy of “If…” I’m beyond curious at this point.
Another great show!
one thing that came to me I wanted to say to Drew.. in the future, try not to just lump all the movies as “Pixar” and base your expectaions on the overall Pixar name.
Try to maybe base it on if its a John Lasseter film, or a Brad Bird film, or an Andrew Stanton film, Peter Doctor, or if it has co directors as they at times do…
there really is a difference in styles. The next film, WALL-E, is directed by Stanton, who directed Finding Nemo. whenever you see it, maybe see if you can find connections.
