Korean horror film “A Tale of Two Sisters“, directed by Kim Jee-Woon, is set to be remade by….yes, that’s right, you guessed it - Hollywood. Since when can Hollywood leave Asian (horror) films alone? And the answer is never.

The film revolves around two sisters who return home to their father after spending time in a mental institution. But their saught after recovery is hindered by their obsessive stepmother and an interfering ghost. The only person who is almost certain to star in it is The 40 Year Old Virgin and Slither star Elizabeth Banks. Filming for the movie is set to start in July and it will be directed by brothers Charles and Thomas Guard.
Looking forward to it? Or sick of the Hollywood horror remakes? What are your thoughts?

mmmm, A tale of Two Sisters is my favorite S. Korean Horror film. Just great atmosphere, great story, great subtext, great sound design…Wow, this movie is a 10/10 for me. Combine that with
For the record, top Asian Horror Pictures from each country:
Audition - Japan (close seconds Pulse, Ringu)
Dumplings - Hong Kong/China
A Tale of Two Sisters - S. Korea
Buppah Rahtree - Thailand (Although I’ve heard Shutter is even better)
And the first Pang Brothers horror “The Eye” definitely has its moments.
I find it hilarious that they’ve got Sturla in what I believe is the step-mother role here in the film. But it’s like 1000 to 1 that this remake will be as good as the original.
When they remade THE RING, the original had several flaws (which they fixed with the American one, while making some new flaws…so both versions of that film are pretty much equal)..
Now I’m rambling…but if you like horror, check out the ones above…
Well I haven’t seen A Tale of Two Sisters myself, but I have seen it in shops here and there but just haven’t had the urge to buy it. I will rent it one day for sure.
As for the films you mentioned…Audition…jeez THAT was a let down. I was told to just hang on through the slow love story for the first hour because the last half hour is the “sickest, most disturbing thing you will ever have to sit through”. - WAS IT HELL! It was on par with the part in Saw with the cutting (that’s all I will say about Saw for spoiler purposes
).
And you know Kurt that I have only seen the short Three Extremes version of Dumplings but I have the full length version in my rental queue.
And FINALLY someone who thought the American remake of The Ring (the first one mind you) was a good film. It is one of the few films that I have liked the same consistently since I first saw it.
On the American Ring. It didn’t sag in the middle as bad as the Japanese film did.
Also, the Horse sequence that was added was, for me, the money shot in the film. The Japanese original did the ‘TV-shot’ much better, certainly the money shot in that one. The American Ring loses some points for going for a too-slick feel every now and again (see climax of film) and the Brian Cox suicide was just needlessly overblown, bordering on ludicrous.
Still, I am of the opinion that the American one is the rare case of being ahead of the original. For the record I saw the Japanese one first (several times) years before..
On Audition, it is the PSYCHO (as in hitchcock) of the 21st century for me. Groundbreaking, dramatic, subtle and horrifying on several levels.
The Saw films are just gimmicky quick fixes, nothing lasting or even terribly interesting when all is said or done.
The reason I compared Saw and Audition I mean how actually hard it was to watch or how gross etc is that leg cutting bit in Saw (which was easy to watch for me
) and the torture part in Audition. I seriously don’t see what the big deal is with Audition myself. I’ll take Ichi The Killer over it any day of the week.
“I seriously don’t see what the big deal is with Audition myself. I’ll take Ichi The Killer over it any day of the week.”
Wow! There is where we differ! I’ll take the restrained approach every time. Saw and Ichi are a little to quick to pander to their audience (for me anyway).
