Curse of the Golden Flower

Zhang Yimou has always been known for his use of color and symmetry in his films.  They are all positively breathtaking in terms of their visuals.  His new film, due out this winter looks like more of the same taken to new heights if the recently released stills are any indication.

For fans of Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Raise the Red Lantern or the more recent Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles (which I have yet to see), you’ll be sure to not miss Curse of the Golden Flower.

Starring my second favorite actress, Gong Li, this new film also has a website with two trailers and 7 featurettes.  I highly recommend checking out this website asap.  In the meantime, here are some stills to whet your appetite…

Cheers to Twitch for the info and pics.

Grind House

Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez have banded together and made something new and original: Grind House.  Each director made his own seperate horror film then spliced them together to make one long feature; complete with trailers for fake movies in between the two main films.

Now that trailer has hit the web and quite frankly, it’s one of the coolest looking trailers I’ve ever seen.  I am officially STOKED for this film.  Tarantino is always good, Rodriguez is always good.  Together, the two filmmaker’s have 5 films in my personal top 100 with nothing lower than #72.  That’s pretty respectable.

Anyway, on to the action.  You can see this great trailer right here:

Saw III Draws Blood…. for real.

In recent weeks I’ve mentioned the exceptional marketing campaign for the third installment of the Saw series; due out this halloween.  Now I find they’ve taken it one step further… one crazy step further.

Richard over at Filmstalker pointed me towards this article at Empire Online about how they could get the red cloak in the newest poster to be truly blood red.  The answer?  Simple.  Print it with real blood…

“We decided to do a poster and he’s wearing a red cloak. I was talking to the printer and asked what we could do to get the deepest blood red. I asked if it would be possible to use actual blood. There was silence. He said, ‘We could try, but are you serious?’ I said I was dead serious,” Lionsgate marketing chief Tim Palen told Variety.

Not only is it blood, but it’s blood from Tobin Bell; the actual actor who plays Jigsaw in the film.

Bell was also a little bit nervous about the idea, but agreed and headed to the doctor to have the blood drawn. With the thumbs up from the Occupational Safety & Health Administration, an LA based printing company supplied several workers with gloves and masks and set them to work printing up the plasma-inked promos.

All I can say is, “wow.”

The Bourne Ultimatum

Ok, so after reading “The Bourne Identity,” I was less than thrilled with the movie.  It wasn’t horrible, just not great.  I never did get around to seeing The Bourne Supremacy and to be honest, probably never will…probably.  However, if it’s a requisite to see before seeing the up and coming part three, The Bourne Ultimatum, then I guess I’ll have to see it, because I just read this little tidbit of info from realmovienews.com.

Apparently, it is rumored that the up and coming, great actor, Gael Garcia Bernal (Amorres Perros, Motorcycle Diaries, Science of Sleep) is being asked to play the role of the lead villain in The Bourne Ultimatum.  If this news turns out to be true and if Bernal accepts the offer, this will officially be one of the most anticipated movies of 2007 for me.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.  I love seeing great character actors take on villainous roles.  Especially if that actor has never done it before.  It is always, always a great treat.  Hoffman in MI:3, Costner in 3000 Miles to Graceland, Jodi Foster in Inside Man and now Bernal in Bourne.

Throw in the fact that it’s being by director Paul Greengrass, who directed the best movie of the year so far, United 93. Plus co-starring with Damon and Bernal, would be hollywood greats, Julia Stiles, Joan Allen and the amazing David Strathairn.  I don’t really see how the movie could be bad or how you could not be excited about it.

I’ll keep abreast on this situation and let you know if this comes to pass.  Oh I hope so, because then I have just one more excuse to go to the movie theater on a day when I hadn’t planned to.  Maybe I will rent Supremacy, just to get warmed up.
