Groundbreaking Soderbergh

From BBC News:

Director Steven Soderbergh has called the movie business “out of whack” as he prepares to release his latest film in cinemas, on DVD and TV simultaneously.

”The studio model has to be rethought,” he told Hollywood Reporter. He has made low-budget murder mystery Bubble with US company 2929 Entertainment.

The film will be released in January in cinemas and on DVD. On the same day it will be made available on cable TV.

”I want them to sell Bubble DVDs in the theatre lobby,” said the 42-year-old.

Studios are concerned that launching DVDs on the same day as cinema releases will jeopardise box office takings. But Soderbergh believes it is time for the industry to embrace change and new models of distribution.

”Everything changes and evolves,” he said. “We’ve got to get with it, embrace it and find a way to make it work. “This is my response to certain trends in the entertainment industry,” he continued. “The movies are not the way they used to be when I grew up.”

This is weird. Go to the theater and pay $20 (for two people) or go to Best Buy and purchase the movie for $20 on the SAME DAY!? It’ll be interesting to see how this all works out for studios; if it actually happens.

I will not be attening this year, but plans are already in the works for a trip next year. I will report all I see. But for now, I’ll just look at the website and dream.

Matt Groenig PIsses Me Off

What is with this new format for the season 6 DVD set of The Simpsons!? They have been so nice looking on my DVD shelf. They are all the same size and basic design style. So what the hell is this?

It’s got a rounded top and doesn’t fit well within my DVD shelf. It doesn’t match the other 5 seasons even slightly. It’s just annoying. Why would they do this? It would be one thing if they were all a different character starting with season one, but they’re all the same, then they throw in this abomination. The ultra bright yellow doesn’t help the aesthetics either. Great. Now I’m looking at the side of a nearly 2-dimensional Homer Simpson where my DVD should be.
